  • I am a ceramic artist who produces functional ware, as well as ceramic sculpture. I also conduct workshops for people wanting to understand the possibilities of working with clay. I see this as an important part of my practice, as sharing my skills and knowledge with others is a way of enriching people’s knowledge of ceramics, something I am very passionate about.

As I am a small producer, it is my intention that my products will last for a very long time, more than just one lifetime. My products are labour intensive, and care is always taken to ensure quality over quantity. My clay, an organic material, is continuously recycled until it becomes a finished article, so there is absolutely minimal waste in the making process.

It is my hope that through an understanding of the ceramic process, people begin to seek out special pieces, made by skilled craftspeople, so that the raging river of disposable crockery becomes more of a slow trickle in people’s daily lives.

I work from an Artist Studio, and am accepting commissions, as well as supplying retail outlets.

The whimsical and charismatic ceramics of Alison Smiles playfully combine the useful and the sculptural. Smiles paints, scribbles and scratches her hybrid creatures into existence, discovering their personalities as they emerge.

After graduating from the University of South Australia in 2011 Smiles received an Arts SA funded mentorship with Melbourne based ceramicist Vipoo Srivilasa. The following year she became an associate at the Jam Factory where she met the co-founders of her current studio and retail space 6 Hands Studio. Smiles and friends now create and sell their work at 6 Hands located on Rosetta St in West Croydon. In 2015 Srivilasa and Smiles travelled to Korea and spent 5 weeks participating in a mentorship and cultural exchange program, culminating in the exhibition “Beyond Limitations” shown at the Clayarch Museum in Gimhae. Smiles’ artwork can be found in public and private collections locally and internationally.
